Reframing the Picture Perfect Disney Dream

Who else here has been indulging in the sweetness of nostalgia with Disney+?

Like many others born in the nineties, I grew up with Disney movies. I learned about life through the lens of Disney films. Now that I’m an adult, I find myself reevaluating some of the lessons taught in these movies. (Or perhaps maybe they’re not lessons after all, just fantasies.)

You know the ones I’m talking about.

“Your prince charming will arrive, save the day, and complete you in ways you always thought were missing before you met him.”

“Always follow your heart.”

And here’s a direct quote about Tramp (a real ladies’ man… Um, dog) from Lady and the Tramp:

“But someday he is meeting someone different—some delicate, fragile creature who’s giving a wish to shelter and protect.”

I’d like to modify these teachings to something more practical for the children of today.

“Do not wait for a prince charming. You are a complete person without anyone else. You are the love of your life.”

“Always follow your heart, but don’t forget to use your brain.”

“You’re not going to be ‘the one’ to change him. If he ever changes, it definitely will not be for you. These are decisions people have to make by themselves. You can shelter and protect yourself. Don’t stand outside in the rain while waiting for him to hold your umbrella when you can hold your own.”
