This Is How You Move On

Decide you’re done reliving the same story over and over again. You already know how it ends. There is no new beginning, no rewind or pause, or happily ever end. He plucks your heartstrings to compose a new song for a new lover. You’re not surprised. In your heart, you always knew there would be yet another.

But your story is not about him or them. And it’s definitely not about a boy who couldn’t even be a friend. Take your story back. Write yourself a new one that leads to a very different end.

Gaze upon the empty pages. See possibility on every blank line. Trace your fingers along the uncreased binding, and forget you never called him Mine. Remember that he was never on loan. No one belongs to anyone, and you know you can make it on your own.

So don’t make this next story about you and someone else. Make it about you and your journey. You’re all you need—you and yourself.

Don’t forget your family and friends. They’ve always been there for every hopeful beginning and all the disappointing ends.

But this time, you’ll write a better story, and it begins like this:

“Once upon a 2020, this year provided plenty.”

A Kind Heart

I Wish to Write You Out of Me
