How Is Your Heart Doing Today?

If something feels wrong, it probably is. I have a friend who regularly asks, “How is your heart doing today?” From that question alone, I’ve learned the importance of checking in with myself. With this comes the strength to give myself what I need in that very moment.

For years, I let routine, comfort, and fear dictate how I lived my life and how I let people treat me. I neglected the figurative health of my heart until it became so fat and heavy that when I leaped into the ocean, the weight of my heart, filled with quiet resentment and neglect, almost drowned me.

As I gasped for help, it wasn’t my prince charming who saved me. I had actually been screaming for his help and validation for years and was met with mere silence and neglect. This moment was no different. Instead, it was the hands of my friends and family that extended their reach and saved me from drowning in the turbulent waters that this “prince charming” and I had created especially for me.

If I’ve learned anything from my twenties, it’s that you need to be strong enough to hold both your head and heart high. Let go of anything or anyone that makes you feel heavy or helpless. Life’s journey is a perilous one, even without the added weight of those that bring you down. In letting him go, I kept myself.

Bon voyage.

And by the way, how is your heart doing today?
