Lights, camera, heartbreak.

Movies do an amazing job at romanticizing relationships and love. It’s kind of messed up really for us hopeless romantics that indulge in such content.

The protagonists become acquainted with each other in a meet-cute that’s often really awkward and less than perfect.

But the romance that ensues between always is more than perfect. Soul-baring, euphoric, all-consuming. This is what we usually call the honeymoon phase. And just like any phase, it doesn’t last forever. Something from one person’s past (or present) threatens to drive a rift between the two protagonists. Chaos ensues.

“How could you?”

“I need some space.”

“I never want to see you again.”

These are just some of the phrases uttered by the wounded. But soon comes the climax of the movie—the big reveal that everything was just a big misunderstanding.

“I’m sorry.”

“I need you.”

“I love you.”

Two to three words fix everything. Make up, kiss, happily ever after. The curtains close.

Real life often lacks the pivotal climax that allows the two protagonists to stay together. Oh, if only these words were enough to bridge the dark chasms we often create between ourselves and those we loved.

Maybe if we just let a little more light into our lives. Just maybe we could have our own happily ever afters… Even after the curtains close.
